From August 19th to September 1st, the freshmen of UTSEUS had a full schedule and a wide range of activities. They not only attended the “First class of UTSEUS”, warm class meetings, interesting student organization presentations, but also took part in English grading tests, freshmen orientations and experience-sharing sessions.
On the morning of August 29, 2018, an English grading test came as scheduled. Some senior students kindly prepared some test supplies like radio, which helped the freshmen successfully complete their “first exam of university”.
At 2 pm, all the 2018 freshmen of UTSEUS attended the “first class in UTSEUS” at J103. Mr. Liu Wanyu, Dean of UTSEUS, Mr. Zhou Yi, Head of Student Affairs Office, Mrs. Jiang Jin, Director of Academic Affairs Office, Mr. Zhao Ling, Director of Information Service Office, Mrs. Kong Weiping, Head of Student Affairs Department of UTSEUS and Mrs. Liu Ting, counsellor of freshmen attended the event which was hosted by Mr. Zhou Yi.
At the beginning of the event, Mr. Zhou Yi showed the introduction video of UTSEUS to the freshmen. Then Mr. Liu Wanyu, Dean of UTSEUS, expressed his sincere welcome to the arrival of the freshmen, and gave a brief introduction of UTSEUS including the basic situation, the training objectives, orientation, vision, mission of the school and the pedagogy methodology of French engineer education. While listening to Mr. Liu, students who had just started their life in UTSEUS can hardly conceal their excitement and expectation for the future.
After the speech of Mr. Liu, Mrs. Jiang Jin, Director of Academic Affairs Office, gave guidance on the upcoming first round class selection. Mrs. Jiang explained the use of theTeaching Guidefor the students, demonstrated how to operate the course selection system and emphasized the precautions. Mr. Zhao, Director of Information Service Office, brought an introduction to the network resources of Shanghai University and UTSEUS. Finally, Mrs. Kong, Head of Student Affairs Department of UTSEUS, briefed the students on “Daily Student Affairs of UTSEUS” including scholarships and subsidies.
At last, Mr. Zhou quoted the saying “Head forward fearlessly without looking back” as an ending of the event. Entering university is a new starting point for life. After attending this “first class at UTSEUS”, the freshmen must have been full of confidence and well prepared to embrace the future life at UTSEUS.
On the morning of August 30th, freshmen from six classes attended separate class meetings respectively according to their class number. The meetings were started by watching videos made by senior students who worked as assistants of freshmen. In the video, senior students showed the freshmen around the campus, the funny conversation in the video caused bursts of laughter. Next, the freshmen introduced themselves to the class for the first time. Then went the part of the temporary convener election. The candidates came forward in turn to show that they had the confidence to lead the class to participate in various activities during this period. It was an intense yet happy competition.
After the election, the students were arranged to fill in the “Shanghai University Freshmen Admission Information Card”. Finally, each class selected several games to play and ended the meeting in laughter.
On the afternoon of August 30th, the freshmen passed through the campus with scorching sun overhead and arrived on the forth floor of Building C to conduct their first course selection in university. The teachers had already opened the air conditioner for them, waiting in the classroom to answer questions about the course selection at any time. Afterwards, the student associations at UTSEUS conducted promotional activities in J103.
On August 31st, it had been five days since the freshmen started their university life in Shanghai University. All freshmen gathered in J103 to participate in the group meeting. This meeting was mainly about experience-sharing. Others who attended the meeting were Mrs. Liu, counsellor of freshmen, Mr. Jin Peng, instructor of French learning and some second-year students. The host of the meeting was Mr. Li Bingqian, Head of assistant students.
First, Mr. Jin talked about his idea of “how to become a positive UTSEUS student”, “how to learn French”, and “how to take advantage of university resources”. He also expressed his opinion on topics like “changing to another major” and “start-up business”. Mr. Jin was so humorous that the students could not help applauding.
Later, several second-year students who had just finished their summer camp in France brought back a lot of comments on UTSEUS, France, and their majors, offering many suggestions to the freshmen about their future study.
At last, Mrs. Liu Ting, who had been busy for welcoming the freshmen, introduced herself formerly to the freshmen for the first time.
On September 1st, Shanghai University held the opening ceremony for all the 2018 freshmen.
At 7 am, the freshmen of UTSEUS gathered at the gate of Southern district and headed for the stadium.
At 8:30, the opening ceremony officially began. Mr. Jin Donghan, Party Secretary and President of Shanghai University, Mr. Zhou Xin, an outstanding alumnus and many other Shanghai University leaders attended the ceremony.
The spirit of “Be the first to worry about the troubles across the land, the last to enjoy universal happiness” had run through the entire ceremony. Teacher representative Prof. Wang Haisong talked about the purpose of university from the perspective of what we should emphasize in university study. Mr. Lv Jiming, the representative of parents, told the story of the contributions of previous headmaster, Mr. Qian Weichang, and inspired the freshmen to be hard-working and courageous. Senior student Zhou xin encouraged other students to live up to their own life by being ambitious and confident. Finally, President Jin combined the city spirit of Shanghai with the mission of university and provided an excellent and exciting lesson for the freshmen.
The orientation schedule then came to an end and a new semester begins from now. Wish all the members of UTSEUS joy and happiness in the new semester!
